Angkor Wat Temple
Angkorian period served as a symbol of Khmer Empire during 9th century to the 15th century; which was defined from 802 A.D. until 1431 A.D. The period started while the Khmer King, Jayavarman II declared himself as “God-King” at the top of Kulen Mountain.
Massive temple construction projects had been carried out by a succession of Khmer kings who ruled during the Angkorian period. As such lots of Khmer temples still stand today within the country and in particular within the vicinity of Siem Reap.
Angkor Wat temple was built by King Suryavarman II (who reigned from 1113 to 1150) to honour Vishnu, identified as a god-king and perhaps as his funeral temple). Angkor Wat is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. It is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. With its soaring towers and extraordinary bas-reliefs, it is considered by many to be one of the most inspiring and spectacular monuments ever conceived by the human mind.

The giant stone faces of Bayon have become one of the most recognizable images connected to classic Khmer art and architecture. |
Bayon Temple is located in the Angkor Thom City (on the ruins of an ancient city) about nine square kilometers. There are 37 standing towers, most but not all sport four carved faces oriented toward the cardinal points. In the Angkor Thom city, there are many temples planted nearby Bayon Temple (located in the center of the city).
The Angkor Thom City is covered by five greatest gates. Southern Gate of Angkor Thom is one of the most famous which is located along the road from Angkor Wat temple.
